Submerged Arc Strip Cladding Process
Source of heat : electrical arc
Dilution : 12 – 18 %
Deposition rate : 14 kg/h or 0.4 m2/h
The energy to melt the strip and the base metal is supplied by the electric arc struck between them. On melting, the agglomerated flux protects the liquid metal and where applicable enriches it with alloying elements. Submerged arc cladding is characterized by:
• Low penetration generating a low level of dilution (12 to 18%) limiting the number of layers of deposit required (two to three depending on the required chemical analysis).
• Good chemical homogeneity of the deposit.
• Low sensitivity to hot cracking (when cladding with nickel alloy) due to the absence of chemical segregation around the deposit (unlike using wire).
• Possible transfer of alloying elements from the flux (compensation and enrichment).
• A very flat coating surface.
