Sodium Carboxy Methyl Cellulose ( SCMC) is a water soluble polymer and is also known as Sodium Cellulose Glycolate, Carboxymethyl Cellulose ( CMC) and Cellulose Gum etc. The chemical name of SCMC is Sodium Salt of Methyl Ether of Cellulose.

SCMC is a white to creamish coloured powder consisting of very fine particles, fine granules. It is odor less and tasteless. It is a hygroscopic powder readily dissolves in water to form colloidal solution. It is insoluble in most of the solvents including ethanol and ether.

APPLICATIONS:

FOODSTUFF INDUSTRY

CMC is widely used in various kinds of milky drinks and condiments and plays a role of stabilization, taste improvement and thickening. In addition, CMC is also used in ice cream, bread, cake, biscuit, instant noodle and fast paste foodstuff for product molding, taste improvement, anti – fragmentation, water retaining and tenacity strengthening.

TOOTHPASTE INDUSTRY

When used in toothpaste, CMC plays the part of adhesion and moulding. It stabilizes the quality of the toothpaste through good compatibleness and keeps the appearance of the toothpaste smooth. By adjusting formulation or controlling production process, it can satisfy various needs of the customers such as good thixotropy, adhesive consistency and stable quality.

DETERGENTS

SCMC is used in detergents as an Anti soil redeposition agent, particle suspender, skin protector, color retention agent, stabilizer, homoginiser, texture protector…

Recommendation
A very special property of SCMC is to stop the redeposition of dirt particles on to the cloth in laundering process. Addition of a small amount of SCMC to detergents especially a synthetic detergent results in a marked improvement of its soil suspending properties. Synthetic detergents as a class are comparatively poor in this respect and the practice of adding SCMC to them is universal. SCMC is most beneficial in the laundering of cotton.
About 10% of the “ active matter� of a laundry detergent powder should be the percentage added as SCMC. This is normally 1-2% SCMC. It is the carboxyl group, which attracts the dirt and holds it, stopping redeposition onto the cloth

TEXTILE

CMC forms non-staining, resistant films with good adhesiveness. It gives higher weaving efficiency. Desizing is easy. It protects the texture of the yarn.

DRILLING

CMC when used in drilling liquid, fixing liquid and fracturing liquid, CMC plays a role of resisting water loss and increasing adhesion so as to protecting the wall of oil well, prevent slurry erosion, take away drill crumbs, protect aiguilles and increase drilling speeds.

PAINT

CMC used as thickener, binder, film former and suspending agent. Improves brushing performance of paints and restrict crystalline growth of fillers. CMC is used in water-soluble paints, plastic emulsion paints and in dry & oil bound distemper.

CERAMICS

CMC is used as a coagulant, water-retaining agent, thickner and stabilizer for ceramic. CMC is used in Ceramic embryo, glazing pulp, coloured glaze separately in ceramic production.

OTHER INDUSTRIES

Ø CMC is used for binding tobacco flakes in tobacco industry.

Ø It is also used as thickener and dispersant in battery.

Ø When used in mosquito repellent incense, it plays a role of strengthening tenacity, molding and providing good compatibleness.

Ø It is used in pharmaceutical industry in Syrup & Dry Suspension as thinker and suspension agent.

Ø Used in pencil leads as a binding agent and moulding performance improvement agent.

Ø It is also used in electric welding rods to improve molding performance.
