Up to 10 distillation programs, comprising temperature/ time profiles and volume setpoints, can be stored in the on-board memory. The programs can be created or modified during use via a ‘ learn’ feature. The unit continuously measures the vapour temperature in the flask and the volume of distillate during heating. When the volume of distillate reaches each volume setpoint, the temperature, time interval, and volume are automatically recorded. The readings are corrected for changes in ambient pressure by an integral precision electronic barometer. The memory can hold up to 28 distillation data sets, each comprising 100 volume setpoints. The vapour temperature within the flask is measured by a digital system that incorporates a " dynamic" simulation model for ASTM 7C/ F and 8C/ F mercury in glass thermometers. Each temperature probe carries a digital signature containing its identity and calibration curve. If a probe is exchanged or replaced, the calibration curve is automatically downloaded into the measuring system. The probe can be calibrated by the user via the instrument. The volume of distillate in the temperature controlled receiving cylinder is measured by directly detecting the bottom line of the meniscus with an imaging array. The use of a solid state imaging array, and detection of the bottom line of the meniscus, provide greater accuracy and repeatability for volume measurement. Conventional methods usually detect the mean level of the meniscus, and apply fixed volume correction coefficients to assume the true recovered volume. The measurement system is calibrated automatically to the graduations on the measuring cylinder to compensate for differences between cylinders. Data can be downloaded to a printer or host computer ( LIMS) via the RS232, and printer ports.
