Guillotine Isolators
SIMPLEX – Fitted to the periphery of the blade is a series of flexible metallic looped and leaf-spring sealing elements. These seals are constructed of austenitic stainless steel or high nickel alloys, depending on the operating conditions. They are designed to seal against both continuous landing bars in the duct framework of the Isolator and to provide a sealing margin of at least 30 mm. The metallic seals alone, give a sealing efficiency of 99.95% or better, on cross-sectional area.
DUPLEX – 100% tightness, required to ensure complete safety for maintenance personnel working in an isolated section, is attained by creating, with a small fan, an air barrier in the inter space between the two sealing surfaces. The pressure zone, set at approximately 50 mm. H2O above the expected duct pressure, does not pump them up. This sealing arrangement has the additional advantage that it provides an automatic venting arrangement if there is a sudden pressure surge. Thus if the first sealing surface pushed off, the second, nearest the isolated section, is pressed even tighter against its landing surface and the gases are vented to atmosphere through the fan.

Seals
In the open position the blade is entirely withdrawn from the duct. The duct is then sealed by an independently operated entry door, fitted around its periphery, or frame, with pressure assisted FOURESS flat flexible metallic seals. This , after the removal of the casing cover plates in the case of enclosed units, allows full and safe access to the blade and its seals for the inspection and maintenance while the main plant remains undisturbed in operation. Thus no loss in sealing efficiency will occur due to the Isolator being inactive for long periods.
Operating Gear
The entire operating gear of the Isolator is located outside the duct and does not come in contact with flue gases. Thus critical components, such as the drive screws, gearboxes, drive shafts and motors, can be inspected and serviced at all times. This ensures that the Isolator will function properly, even after long periods of inactivity, and not itself be the cause of a plant outrage.
Sealing Efficiency
Sealing Efficiency : 99.95% on CSA without seal air. 100% with seal air.
Standard Design Data
SIZE : FOURESS Guillotine Isolators are available for duct sizes upto 100 m² . They are suitable for square, rectangular and with the addition of end plates, circular cross-section.
GAS CONDITIONS : FOURESS Guillotine Isolators are capable of being designed to withstand temperature upto 6500C and pressure differentials upto 2000 mm H2O .
BLADE ENTRY : FOURESS Guillotine Isolators are suitable for installation in horizontal, vertical and inclined ducts. The blades can be arranged to enter from the duct above ( top entry) , from below ( bottom entry) from the side or at an inclined angle.
UNENCLOSED : For negative differentials and gas temperatures below 3000C, the blade is directly withdrawn to atmosphere past the entry door.
DRIVE SYSTEM : The blade is moved by means of a transverse bar connected to a double screw drive. Protective gaiters are fitted over the screws to prevent dust ingress.
ENCLOSED : For positive differentials , where gas leakage to atmosphere during transit cannot be tolerated, or where temperatures exceed 3000 C, the blade is withdrawn into a gas-tight casing ( bonnet) . This ensures that the blade remains at near duct temperature thereby preventing temperature distortion when it is operated.
DRIVE SYSTEM : The blade is moved by means of push-pull rods connected by an external drive carriage to a double screw drive. Where the push-pull rods pass through the frame gas tight glands are fitted . Protective gaiters over the screws to prevent dust ingress.
ACTUATION : Normally the screws are powered by a motor through two reduction gearboxes, the main drive member being located at either the extremities of the Isolator or at approximately duct level. Standard operating speed is 1250 mm/ minute but, by using double start screws or chain drive, speeds upto 10 meters / minute are attainable. Emergency manual drive is provided for operating the Isolator in the event of a power failure.
CONTROL : Limit switches, in pairs are supplied to control the “ OPEN and CLOSED’ positions of the Isolator blade as well as the auxiliary doors. This facilities interlocking with other electrical controls. DUPLEX Guillotine Isolators are supplied with pressure sensing device to trigger an alarm in the event of an air barrier failure pressure surge in the duct.
