3490 & 3490e, 3590 & 3590e, 3592, 9840, 9940 Tape Cartridge and Cleaning
Enterprise tapes are, as the name suggests, a tape format based on the needs of business organizations. These tapes are the backbone of most large-scale and small-scale business backup solutions for most organizations worldwide. It should not surprise anyone therefore that enterprise tapes too are based on a half-inch tape format ( like LTO, DLT, etc) . Enterprise tape media was first released in 1984 in the form of the 3480 tape family. The 3480 tape format only has a 200 MB capacity. The 3490 series was released in 1986 and improved upon the 3480 enterprise tapes; the 3490 series have a 400 MB capacity. An extended model was released in 1991; which is the 3490E that has an 800 MB capacity. From then on enterprise tapes moved on to the 35-- series of which the 3570 was the first and had a data capacity of up to 5 GB of data. Then the 3590 was introduced that could hold up to 10-20 GB native. A new tape cartridge in the 3592 series was later introduced that was compatible with the TS1120 tape drive that could hold up to 700 GB of uncompressed data and the native transfer rate is 104 MB/ s. It must be mentioned that the 34-- and 35-- series of enterprise tapes are IBM products. The 9K series on the other hand are Sun StorageTek products and there have been three generations of the 9840 enterprise tape family. The first generation supported 20 GB capacities; the second was also 20 GB but offered a faster protocol: FICON ( Fibre Connection) rather than ESCON ( Enterprise Systems Connection) architecture, which is designed for mainframes. The second also featured 2 GB Fibre Channel, rather than 1 GB FC, for open systems shops. The third, and current, generation supports 40 GB tape cartridge capacity. The 9940 series are also available in 60-200 GB capacities. Enterprise tapes are still widely in use ( even the 3480 family) a testament to their reliability and their backward and forward compatibility ( for certain products) .
